We’re proud to announce that we have been awarded the title of ‘Best Performing House Builder’ at the eighth annual safety awards presentation from Hull Building Safety Group (HBSG). The award recognises Risby for having an ‘exceptional record for safety’ on our sites across East Yorkshire.
Mark Dobson, director and safety, health and environmental manager at the Hull Building Safety Group (HBSG), commented: “It’s important we continue to recognise local businesses for the work they are doing to keep safety at the core of their working practices, never-more so than during the pandemic.
“We record safety compliance monthly across all our HBSG accredited sites and Risby’s performance saw them come out at the top. Risby not only create excellent homes, but also have a great track record for site safety. It was a pleasure to be able to finally get many of the regions’ best examples of safety together and hand over their trophies.”
The award was accepted by Amy Barrett, who added: “It was great to be acknowledged for the work we do here at Risby to ensure the safety of our sites from the moment ground is broken. In a year when health and safety has taken centre stage, we take great pride in the quality of our homes, and attention to detail when it comes to safety is no different.”

When it came to finding a work experience placement, 15-year-old Calum from Howden School knew he wanted to work in construction. However, when he wasn’t sure which part of the industry he wanted to progress in, he got in touch with the team here at Risby to help him find out!
We asked Calum how he found his week on site at our Shepherd’s Rest development in Beverley.
So Calum, what did you get up to during your work experience?
I got to try out a range of different tasks during my week at Risby. I got to try my hand at different plastering techniques, including patching and applying pre-plaster to plasterboard.
I also had the chance to lay bricks and blocks on site, as well as carry out a number of general labour jobs.
How did you find working with the team at Risby?
The team were really helpful and friendly, and I found it a really good experience.
How does working at Risby compare to going to school?
There were a lot of early starts, and with the longer hours and physical jobs I definitely slept well!
The uniform was also quite different. There was a lot of PPE I needed to wear to work on site. Everyone wore gloves, hard hats, steel toe cap boots and high vis vests. Plus, there were extra restrictions in place for covid.
What did you learn whilst working with the team?
I learnt all about how a construction team works together, and how every job connects together. Working as a team makes things run smoothly and helps progress the site.
What was your favourite part of working with Risby?
I really enjoyed bricklaying, pointing up the bricks on the houses.
Did work experience help you decide what you want to do in the future?
I’ve always known that I wanted to work in the construction industry. Now I have experience working on a site, it’s confirmed that I want to be a bricklayer just like my dad and uncle.
Would you recommend work experience with Risby to other students?
Definitely. It was a really good experience.

For example, who chooses the interiors for a Risby show home? Who am I speaking with when I call Risby? Who manages each development, and how? Hi Jo, we’d love to hear how you started out as an interior designer. How did you get into the industry?
It developed over a long period of time really, but it started with my love for interiors.
After seeing how I’d decorated my own home, friends and family would often ask for advice and soon, I was helping them to choose their own furniture and colour schemes.
Being a very practical person, I decided to try my hand at making a career out of my passion. And I succeeded!
How did you come to work for Risby?
I started working with Risby after I helped managing director Mark Barrett and his wife Sally to decorate their home. I must have done a good job, as they offered me a job designing their development show homes.
It helped that we got along really well, and I’m great at working to a budget – which is important when decorating a home as it can be easy to get carried away!
That was seven years ago. Since then, I’ve worked on all of Risby’s show homes, decorating each to demonstrate their full potential.
How do you design a show home?
It’s important that I put myself in the mind frame of someone that would live in the house I’m designing. Do I have children? What do I like to do in my spare time? Is entertaining important to me?
There’s a very fine line between creating a space that feels like a home and making the house too personal, so it’s essential to keep any décor inoffensive and appealing to a wider audience whilst still standing out from the crowd. As you can imagine, this can be difficult to achieve!
Sourcing the right furniture and deciding on colour schemes is also important. To help with this some of the team visit The Furniture Show in Birmingham each year to keep on top of the latest trends and suppliers.
The great thing about working with Risby is that the team leave me to my own creative devices. They trust me to design a show home that makes a statement, whilst still being on brief. This makes each project more exciting than the last.
Do you have a favourite development?
I really enjoyed decorating the show homes for Shepherd’s Rest in Beverley. There’s such a great choice of homes to choose from for all budgets, so I liked giving each one a different personality.
I particularly liked working with the bi-fold doors in the kitchen areas as they create so much light on the ground floor. It was also fun working with features like secret doors within the latest house types – this sort of thing really sets Risby apart from other developers.
Do you have any top tips for house buyers hoping to decorate their homes to show home standard?
The right choice of wallpaper can make a huge difference when decorating your home. Introducing colour and pattern brings life to an otherwise plain space, and can be as high or low impact as you like.
If you’re not ready to take the plunge with a feature wall, you can instead invest in an interesting piece of art to draw the eye. Artwork of local landscapes are always a brilliant addition to an otherwise clear space as they give a real personal feel to your home and reflect the space often just ten minutes from your home.
Speaking of artwork, you’re also a successful artist – tell us about your work
My art is very textured, layering paints with a pallet knife to create a rustic feel. I would describe it as almost like a sculpture on a canvas, very structured and eye-catching.
I started painting during lockdown, creating art for members of my family. They had a great response, and soon I was receiving commissions for people looking for artwork for their homes! As an interior designer I find it easy to create something that works well in a specific room, keeping to both colour schemes and the buyer’s requests.
My artwork is also currently being displayed at a lockdown art exhibition on Humber Street in Hull city centre, which is amazing for me. As a fairly new artist, receiving praise from others in the industry is lovely and a huge confidence boost. I’ve even managed to sell most of my work. I sold seven in the first weekend alone!
Wykeland has been amazing. The team have helped me to display my work to the public, and it’s currently on display each weekend during August, on a Saturday from 10am-5pm and on a Sunday from 10am-4pm.

As we’re now moving out of lockdown and the property market starts moving again, you may be getting ready to move house. But we know that it’s still a nervous time for some and buyers have a lot of questions. What’s changed? Is it safe to visit a show home? And what about financial concerns?vWe’re here to answer these questions and provide you with the most up-to-date information from our site and sales teams.
1. What’s changed?
Strictly by appointment only – we are not allowing passers-by to visit the show home/sales office. Our sales office is now open 10am – 4pm, Thursday – Monday and you’re able to come and visit by appointment only. This is being done to limit the number of people coming in and out.
Arriving safely: Ample parking is available and we’ve ensured that there’s a safe distance between cars. Our Sales Manager, Trina, will welcome you and will be sat behind a screen during your visit to maintain social distancing.
The buying process: The buying process is still exactly the same. However, there are safety measures now in place with regards estate agent appointments and viewings. Everyone is working hard to make sure that you are safe and feel comfortable.
2. Is it safe to visit a show home?
The short answer is: yes. We have been careful to introduce a series of new measures that will keep both staff and visitors safe.
Limited number of viewings – we’re reducing the number of people entering the show home at one time. Booking your slot will make sure we can manage numbers safely and efficiently. We are taking details of each customer for track and trace purposes.
Staying safe inside: Masks and hand sanitising stations are now available upon arrival. We’re also advising that visitors don’t use the toilets at the show home and avoid touching door handles, where possible. You’ll be guided through the show home, as normal – with social distancing measures in place, of course.
Health concerns: If you have booked to come and look around our show home, but have since experienced health problems, please do let us know. Rebooking your slot is a simple process.
3. I have financial concerns about buying a property, what can I do?
It’s been a strange and uncertain time for us all. But please be assured, purchasing a home through Risby Homes is a safe and secure process. We’re a family-run, local developer that really cares about our buyers. We know it’s hard to find the ‘dream home’. So if you decide that one of our properties is the one for you, we can help make your dream home a reality. If you have any financial concerns just let us know. Although work for Phase 2 of Shepherd’s Rest is temporarily paused, we’d like to reassure buyers that we have been working on schedule and you will be kept informed with any updates as the situation unfolds.
